First Attempt at Super-Wide-Angle Portraits

Diamela Wide Angle – Havana, Cuba

I attempted some atypical portraits on day 2 of model shooting with a super-wide-angle lens. I used the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 at 17mm on the Sony A7C II. Why such a wide portrait? The instructor, Scott Robert Lim, is known for creating dramatic super-wide-angle portraits. I was making my first attempt at emulating his techniques, but this picture really isn’t great. I wanted to show it to you and share my progression through this journey.

I was also working with a flash and a trigger, something I don’t typically do, so it added another level of challenge. Here we have Diamela at a museum with wonderfully elaborate architecture. Tipping the camera up to show the dramatic background isn’t a great look for the model.

This is a better portrait, if only because I’m not tilting the camera upward. I’m shooting it straight on, which doesn’t create crazy wide-angle distortions. I got better as the day progressed, as I will show you in later posts.
