I have one more street photograph from Obispo Street. However, unlike yesterday, I didn’t ask these teenagers for a portrait. They do have expressions that I like, and they are unaware that I took the shot.
The Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 is not a typical street photography lens; it’s on the larger side. Street photographers typically prefer smaller prime lenses to avoid standing out. Given how friendly and outgoing the Cuban people are, I felt comfortable using this larger lens, and they didn’t seem to mind. It’s not a setup I would be comfortable using in New York City or Paris.
A zoom lens is also atypical. Purists like the challenge of using a non-zooming lens with a 28mm to 50mm focal length. That forces the photographer to be closer when making pictures. Using a zoom lens with this much focal length seems too easy. I was at 67mm for this image.

From the photos, the country doesn’t seem to be on its last legs as some commentators have said. What’s your impression about the state of the country?
Hi David, these photos are from my trip in early October 2024, so I can’t speak to the current condition of the country. The people were lovely, but even back then, many buildings were in poor condition, as documented in the series. I heard there were occasional power outages, though we didn’t experience any in Old Havana. On the day we left, there was a short power outage at the airport.
