Neon Subway – New York, New York

Everything in Times Square seems to be glitzed up with flashing lights, bold colors, and neon. That’s true even for subway entrances like this one on 42nd Street. It’s a stark contrast to the dark hole of an entrance I featured a week ago.

I’ve often mentioned that I love neon, so you can understand why I love this subway sign. Not as clearly visible is another “Subway” sign formed from individual flashing lights, along with a parade of circular subway line designations. The entrance isn’t just attractive; it’s also a wonderful piece of user-centered design.

What I equally like about this photograph is the woman looking up and admiring the view. I mentioned in a recent post how New Yorkers usually assume that people walking while looking upward are tourists. That’s okay, especially in Times Square. I’m sure the majority of folks here are from out of town.
