Last year, the hip and stylish South Congress Hotel opened on the hip and stylish South Congress Avenue. Architecturally, it adopts the latest Austin trends, a mix of modern and industrial. There’s a lot of exposed form-created concrete walls and rusted metal accents. I like the look, it works well for the area.
The courtyard, while separated from the street, references it. There is a minimalist-industrial feel that’s surprisingly warm and comfortable. Shot with the Panasonic ZS50 as part of my Photo Sketchbook Collection.

That style of architecture definitely suits the southwest better than the northeast. The building like that in this area — about 50 years after they were built — are eyesores. They never looked right, even when they were new and in this climate, concrete doesn’t age well.
Yeah, I could understand that.
Also, I’ve always viewed the Northeast is a more traditional, architecturally. Modern buildings don’t seem to work as well, in general, as the southwest.
