Continuing with a few more SXSW portraits, I met Kelly at the Amazon’s Resistance Radio venue, on Monday, a week ago. Unlike the Nat Geo Basecamp on dirty 6th, this place was located in the more upscale warehouse district on West 4th Street. Amazon was promoting their original Prime Video shows, and their flagship “The Man in the High Castle” acted as the theme. They created a fun place and you rack up “points” visiting different areas which gets you a free second drink — you got a free drink for just visiting.
“The Man in High Castle” is based on a book by Philip K. Dick, which takes place in the 1960’s, in a mythical world where the U.S. lost World War II. Everything east of the Rockies is controlled by the Nazis and the west is controlled by Japan. There is an underground resistance movement, of course, and that’s the loose theme Amazon used to construct this elaborate marketing effort. I’m really enjoying the show, which just finished their 2nd season. Kelly is holding an actual record, complete with a German theme, which they were giving out free to visitors.
From Friday through Monday, a week and half ago, I ended up going to SXSW events on all four days. It was a fun time and I got to shoot a lot of photographs but I was actually glad to get back to the relative quiet of work. SXSW along with the crowds can be exciting but tiring. I particularly enjoyed this year since many events were open to the non-badge holding public, like me.
