I met father and son, Carlos and Carlos Jr., at the Vox Media event on Friday. Carlos referred to his son as Carlos 2.0, which I find funny in a techie kind of way. After all, we were at SXSW Interactive, a tech and media conference.
Carlos 2.0 was sporting a Fujifilm X-M1, for the photographers who are curious. Both his Fuji and the Olympus PEN-F that I was using, share that retro flair, so there was an implicit bond, of sorts. Carlos Jr. was working, but not for Vox or the venue. He was the photographer for one of the vendors at the event. The younger Carlos had recently moved to Austin and his father was visiting.
All of this year’s SXSW Portraits so far, and the subsequent ones, I shot at this Vox Media event. I did explore other parts of downtown Austin, but I found the casual comfort of The Belmont and the Vox event the most enticing. I felt like I was part of the tech/media experience without fighting the crowds outside of this isolated oasis.
