I met Nikki on the second floor of The Belmont, during the SXSW Vox Media event. She was sitting on a comfy TempurPedic bed, one of many on display, where people lounged at this venue. I guess it was nearly hedonistic in a techie kind of way. It was a nice location too, out of the sun, with an occasional breeze.
I was attracted to Nikki’s style, with her large sunglasses and sort-of Egyptian looking blingy necklace. I was surprised to learn she’s from Austin. I was thinking LA or New York. She’s dressed way too nicely for someone from Austin. Not to dis the city that I call home, for over 26 years, but the usual Austin attire is a T-shirt and shorts. For more formal occasions, a T-shirt and form-fitting black yoga pants.
Unlike many of my portraits at this event, Nikki is a visitor here, like me. She was not part of Vox Media or the venue. Nikki is the sixth featured portrait from this SXSW ’18 Portrait series. All shot with my Olympus PEN-F and Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 lens. A very classic street photography setup, which I’ve re-purposed for these casual portraits.
