After I made my intended photo of the 2nd Street Bridge, I was walking around with my tripod. Rather comically, I had attached the compact Canon G7X Mark II, which nearly disappears relative to the size of the tripod. On a whim, I captured this image. It turned out better than I expected.
At 18 minutes past the first hint of blue hour, the sky has turned from electric to deep blue. From left to right we have the Central Library, Seaholm Residences — a condo added as part of the Seahom redevelopment, and The Independent. Quite unexpectedly the Big Dipper is visible, centered between the three structures, which you might be able to make out, if you click on the photo and look at the larger image.
Post processing helped a lot. The dim image, destined to be deleted, came alive as I applied some magic via Capture One. For me, shooting the photograph is only the first step in making an image. I don’t heavily manipulate, but I consider the tweaks I make in post to be part of the creative process.
