What’s the difference between street photography and street portraits? I don’t know if these are official definitions, but this is the distinction I make. I generally refer to street photography as candid photographs taken without the subject’s permission. The subject may or may not know that they are being photographed. A good example is yesterday’s photograph where most where unaware of my photography except one.
In contrast, I define a street portrait as a picture of a person on the street where I asked permission to take a photograph. That is the case with today’s image.
I’m not sure if this woman entirely understood. I wasn’t even sure she spoke English. But, I gestured with my camera and smiled. She didn’t seem to mind. I also like the people in the background that seem to get a kick out a tourist making a portrait. A couple of them are watching and smiling at me.
