I’m sure, like many of you, you try to do the right thing to minimize COVID. I rarely go out, and if I do, I mainly just go to the grocery store. I wear my mask and try to stay away from people. I’ve also studied a lot about the disease to be as knowledgeable as possible.
Back in September, however, I did the riskiest thing since the start of the pandemic. I went out with my wife, met a couple for dinner, and ate inside. We originally planned to eat outside, but the interior tables were separated from each other. And, only every other one was available for seating. We figured that we were adequately distanced from others.
Subsequently, I’ve learned how aerosol transmission works, and it’s a vector for spreading COVID. Having space between tables may not be enough in a restaurant where people are not always wearing masks. The air-conditioning or heating can circulate the particles throughout the interior. Aerosol transmission is like smoke. If you can smell a cigarette, for example, across the room. Then, it’s equivalent to risking unwanted virus particles without a mask.
After that once incident, I only eat outside at a restaurant, if I go at all. Luckily, there were fewer cases in September, and I appeared to have dodged a bullet. I took this picture during that outing. You can clearly see the place followed all the rules, closing down adjoining tables. But is this enough? The research seems to indicate, maybe not.
