With the electrical power back on, it was business as usual. I found out in advance that the students were going on stage from the left, which seemed odd. Therefore, I found seats on the right side of the arena. I was well-positioned to shoot my son, making his stage entrance and exit.
I successfully captured my son and girlfriend doing their stage appearance, and I was relaxing upfront. I was waiting for one more person to photograph, a son of a friend, when a proud parent walks up to the front. I immediately went into street photography mode.
I like documenting scenes, which I sometimes equate — maybe improperly — with street photography. They are both candid captures of life around us. I just loved this scene of a well-dressed woman going to the front to — most probably — better see their graduating child. At least, that’s the story I told myself as I made the image.
