I made this picture of The Duke almost 10 minute after yesterday’s sunset cruise photo. Though it was well past sunset and bordering on blue hour, I continued shooting into the night. Waikiki comes alive in the evenings, and the cooler temperatures make for a pleasurable walk.
Duke Kahanamoku is a legend in Hawaii. He is a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming. Later he popularized surfing, attracting fans in mainland America. You see restaurants and streets named after him in Waikiki.
His statue is a popular tourist attraction and is always adorned with leis. I’ve taken snapshots before and even once featured a holiday card with my two sons flanking the duke. This time, I was looking to create a high-quality, high-resolution photo. The evening worked well. The crowds were reduced, and the post-sunset color proved attractive.
