Speaking of the Rainbow Drive-in, which I mentioned in yesterday’s Loco moco duel. Here is the outdoor ordering area. This is the original location in Kapahulu. It’s been open since 1961.
The daytime lighting is not nearly as exciting. But I can imagine the bare-bulb fluorescent lights and the neon upfront would make an excellent evening picture. Maybe I’ll go again in a future Hawaii visit for dinner. Located on the outskirts of Waikiki, it’s a 30-minute walk from our hotel. We opted to go there by bus.
They are famous for plate lunches serving 1000 a day. They’ve been on a few TV shows too. I ordered the Loco moco, which I found just okay. My son wanted a takeout cheeseburger which sounded odd for a plate lunch place. Turned out to be an excellent choice with an unexpectedly tasty burger. I might order that next time.
