The Rise of Long Island City

Skyline, Long Island City – Queens, New York

On the third day of my New York City trip, I finally head toward Manhattan. I spent day two catching up with my high school friends — many snapshots but not many blog-oriented photos. I’m on the Long Island Expressway heading west and captured this picture of Long Island City.

For years, Manhattan was the home of skyscrapers. That’s still true. However, the outer boroughs and New Jersey are witnessing considerable growth. Long Island City, the community on the western-most portion of Queens, had one tall building rising above a sea of old warehouses. The recent changes floored me.

I always thought a high-rise in Long Island City facing Manhattan would be ideal. Instead of being mixed within the jumble of tall buildings, you’ll get to see the Manhattan skyline rising above the East River. The development is finally catching up.
