The entry to the Vessel looks like some futuristic portal, the kind they have in Star Trek where the aliens go for teleportation. It’s a lovely angular design to a structure that’s become a tragedy magnet — four people have jumped to their deaths.
The Vessel is not available for climbing though the ground-level base is open. On my visit, it was closed until later in the day. I didn’t wait. I have places to go and people to see.
I visited Hudson Yards for the architecture and was not planning to experience the Vessel anyway — though it would’ve been a worthwhile climb — given the option, with 154 interconnected flights of stairs containing 2,500 steps. I’m satisfied with just the photographs, however.
