A lot happens during the long series that I post on the blog. Thus I’m pausing my New York City coverage for a short while to feature other subjects. The 2022 Dia de los Muertos parade in Austin happened recently, making its triumphant return after two years of COVID hold.

While the main event is the parade, I prefer the pre-parade setup for photography. It’s an opportunity to document behind the scenes and make candids and portraits.

Camera and lens selection is always a challenge and an opportunity. This year I went with the Fujifilm GFX 50S II and GF63mm f2.8 lens. It’s not the fastest combination. However, it produces detailed files, glorious color, and a shallow depth of field. It allows me to isolate subjects.

The 2022 coverage starts with these static objects — standing quietly before the parade. They take centerstage while the soft background gives context to the environment.
