Jazmin returns after being featured last November at Koko’s Barvarian, a venue on the east side. I made today’s portrait at the Ballroom just north of the University of Texas campus in central Austin, once part of Spider House.
There’s also a gear change from last year when I used the Fujifilm GFX 50S II. I’ve downsized and sped up using the Fujifilm X-S10 with the 50mm f1.0 lens. The smaller and nimbler camera focuses faster and more precisely, while the lens allows for a shallower depth of field. However, the image quality, including the high ISO performance, is superior on the GFX.
The flow and technique of making portraits with these cameras are very different. Because the GFX is slower, I ask the models to slow down and hold their poses. With faster focusing, there is more free-form movement, producing more images with a lower hit rate. However, I get to choose from more poses and expressions.
