Rounding out my first night of late-night urban landscapes with my new Sony A7C, I finish at the State Theater on Congress Avenue. I usually feature the Paramount, but parked cars made for a distracting composition. I’m just a couple of blocks from dirty East 6th Street, but Congress Avenue, the primary north-south downtown street, creates a more fitting end to a photo series.
I’m delighted that the Sony A7C captured this high dynamic range scene with the perfectly exposed neon. I just raised the shadows slightly in post-production. I noticed the A7C exposes somewhat darker than the Fujifilm X-S10. When shooting urban landscapes at night, I often underexpose 1/3 of a stop on the Fuji, but this may not always be necessary with the Sony.
This composition from across the street looks less distracting, even with the parked cars. The black-and-white creates an old-timey glow. As you can see, the Paramount and State Theaters are adjacent — the last two theaters left on Congress Avenue.
