My wife and I had a great time walking around in old town Zurich despite the occasional wet weather. Though it was only a few hours, we felt we got a flavor of the city, which we would’ve missed if we immediately transited to our next destination.
We left about an hour to get dinner before boarding our scheduled train to our final destination for the night. We walked all over the station and the adjoining shops for a suitable place but struggled. Before our trip, I had staked out a promising pizza place, but we couldn’t find it. It might have closed since the blog entry I read during my research.
We finally settled on this seafood establishment.
The place is more fast food than restaurant. A big glass case showcased the available options. These sandwiches didn’t look half bad.
The other dishes look okay, too. I ordered some kind of seafood nuggets and fries that were decent. My wife requested an assortment of seafood.
Our order might have been lost in translation, or the server purposely took advantage of obvious tourists, but he gave us more than we requested. Then, he charged us an outrageous amount for the seafood salad. In total, our bill came out to about $100. To top it off, my wife’s assortment wasn’t even very good. He didn’t overcharge us; it was the actual amount, given its weight — Zurich is an expensive city. In retrospect, ordering seafood in Switzerland is foolish. It is a landlocked country very far from any coastline.
The incident was a downer on our lovely day in Zurich. Not only was it the low point of the day, but our entire trip to Europe spanning a few cities in Switzerland and Paris. On the positive side, if this was the worst thing that happened to us, it was a fantastic trip.
