Stairway of Grandure, Palace of Versailles – Versailles, France
As I wind down the coverage inside the Palace of Versailles, I’m looking for architectural drama befitting a royal palace. This marble-encrusted stairway is a worthy candidate.
At the beginning of this Versailles series, I featured this beautifully proportioned staircase. I said it was simple, though you might not have believed me at the time. Now contrast that staircase to the one featured today. For the record, I prefer the simpler design but I have modern aesthetics and don’t have the royal blood to appreciate the ornateness.
I found more elaborate staircases in France, however — like this one at the Opéra Garnier. France seems like a land of one-upmanship.

I enjoyed Versailles very much. I noticed how the steps on this staircase had been worn down by the millions of tourists shoes. Rosemary and I have been to France several times. Our last trip was when the Arch de Triumph was wrapped by Christo’s heirs. We went to Normandy and did the whole battlefield tour. We are traveling to Ireland next summer. Looking forward to to that.
