I continued my trek towards the Central Business District, crossing the street from the Seaholm development and walking past The Independent, Austin’s former tallest building. It’s still the tallest condo and famous for its Jenga-like design.
The upscale lobby had a nice glow, further enhanced by the monochrome conversion. The lobby proportions seem to be in keeping with the building—airy without being ostentatious. As is common these days for Austin skyscraper developments, the parking garage is right above the lobby, which seems weird. However, a pedestrian or resident walking by would probably not notice.
A substantial portion of the structure dedicated to cars is necessary for Austin’s skyscraper design. Even if people live downtown, they want their vehicles. By contrast, you don’t see developments like these in New York City, where more people go carless in Manhattan.
