Torchy’s Exterior and Interior Monochromes

Exterior, Torchy’s – Austin, Texas

Not only did I add the monochrome treatment to the Torchy’s exterior for added sparkle, but this is where I ate dinner. The glowing sign enticed me to some of their famous tacos.

Looking back at my past blog posts, I noticed a few other posts from this Torchy’s, but I highlight this particular one I shot with the Fujifilm GFX 50S II, a medium format camera with a larger than a full-frame sensor with 51MP. The color version is subtle, and there’s a black-and-white version too.

There’s no question the Fuji GFX has superior resolution, sharpness, and less noise. It’s no match for a compact camera with a cropped Micro 4/3 sensor. However, you’re hard-pressed to see the difference in these small blog sizes. Click on the image for a larger view, and with a trained eye, you can see differences. The GFX version is more detailed with more subtle grays, while the Leica D-Lux 8 has more contrast and brighter highlights. Some of this is due to the differences in processing. However, there’s no question that the camera with a smaller sensor has a diminished dynamic range.

Technical differences aside, which photograph do you like better? This is an entirely different question and ultimately more important. I think the GFX version is almost too clean and lacks some character. Today’s D-Lux 8 version looks a bit more filmic.

Monochrome Skyscrapers - Austin, Texas

While enjoying my taco dinner, I engaged in interior photography. I shot from the dining area towards the bar, which is separated by this high table and a sculptural lighting fixture. It’s a busy image but with sufficient glow to make it interesting.
