Street Photography at Costco

Samples, Costco – Austin, Texas

It might seem odd to do street photography inside a Costco. But I like to document the places that I visit most often. At least once a week, to pick up my leafy and micro greens and chicken for my salad, among other things that pull me in. Shooting up close like this seems intimidating, and using a small EDC camera can help a lot. That’s where I tried out the compact Leica D-Lux 8. With physical aperture and shutter speed dials, I could preset the exposure and pre-zoomed to a reasonable focal length. That allowed me to fire off a shot quickly.

Taking just one or so pictures risks less than-ideal expressions, but I like what I snapped here. Plus, it adequately captures the vibe of the store.

Clothing, Costco - Austin, Texas

I’m told the Costco I shop at is the busiest in Austin. The self-checkout line sometimes stretches to the back of the store. On one of these lines, I snapped the clothing section as I passed by. It serves as documentation of 2025 prices: Levi’s jeans for $38.99. With the rate of inflation these days, that’s going to seem inexpensive in the near future.

Two years ago, during the hotter-than-usual, oppressive summer we had in Austin, I vowed to change my clothing from cotton to performance fabrics. I purchased some fancy lightweight clothing at a boutique and a well-known athleisure brand, but I actually like the pants at Costco better. Plus, they were only 1/10th the cost of those fancy brands. When you buy a Leica, you have to save in other areas.
