During the two-hour photo walk, I explored the University of Texas, shooting architecture, observations, and some street photographs. Of all those images that night, today’s picture is my favorite. Unlike yesterday’s architectural neon photo that I was hoping to make, this one resulted purely by accident.
Using the Leica D-Lux 8 with a 24 to 75mm zoom, I unconsciously adjusted my focal length to the subject. I just happened to pick a classic street photography setting of 35mm, and it worked great to compose this scene. It contained all the elements to capture the entire story. The image truly came to life with the black-and-white conversion. The motion blur of the people, in contrast with the crisp architecture, added dynamism and stability.
It looks like a timeless image that could’ve happened anytime in the last 75 years. The only giveaway is the electric scooter. The glowing lights from the marquee-like structure give it that classic street photography vibe.
