Is it strange to take a picture of Costco? Perhaps. This big-box warehouse retailer doesn’t have any notable architecture—it’s just a large rectangular box. Though shot at peak blur hour, it’s as nice as a building like this can look.
Part of EDC (Every Day Carry) photography is documenting everyday life. And while a visit to Costco may not be as noteworthy as a vacation or even a trip downtown to see the ever-growing Austin skyline, I would argue it’s more important. I shop at Costco every week; it is my most-shopped-at store by visits and dollar volume. Why not take pictures of places that impact one’s life?
Of course, I didn’t camp out at Costco to wait for optimal blue hour. I just happened to have my camera with me during my shopping and snapped a picture. It’s a scene of our time. Think back to mall pictures from the 1970s and 80s or old black-and-whites of Model Ts parked in front of a bustling downtown store. They were equally pictures of the every day—except fifty or a hundred years later, they look special.
