Downtown Walgreens – San Antonio, Texas

The bright red neon starkly contrasts yesterday’s old-world black-and-white church. However, we are still in San Antonio. We are downtown now at the corner of East Houston and Navarro Streets. I had to capture this as soon as I saw the glowing red neon.

While this is obviously a new building, the retro-looking drug store neon is a great touch, especially the red and green sign that juts out. Downtowns should be special, and even a Walgreens should look elevated from the standard suburban variety.

I shot all the San Antonio photos in this series with the Fujifilm GFX 50R. The lens is special since I used an adapted Canon 35mm f2 IS complete with auto-focus. A scene like this is perfect for this lens since I was hand-holding a shot at night. The GFX 50R did not have in-body image stabilization. With a fast f2 aperture and very modest stabilization via the lens, I was able to take pictures at night without a tripod, which was a game-changer at the time.
