The International Market Place is a sizable mall spanning Kalakaua Avenue to Kuhio Avenue. This architectural detail, which I named the Super Oculus, is the mall’s centerpiece near the Kuhio entrance.
This multi-stage oculus design is striking enough without the fisheye treatment. However, seen through this distorting super-wide lens, it becomes a wacky next-level entity like a wormhole where you can transcend time and space. The reality is significantly more mundane, but it’s fun to exaggerate and dream of a more dramatic world.
The escalator takes you to the second level but not much else. The rest is architectural flourishes. There is no space for people, and it serves no practical purpose. However, it makes for a heck of a design statement. This photograph may be my most dramatic fisheye.
