Orchard Road – Singapore

Issue 75 of my fabulous photography magazine is hot off the digital presses (via email). Travel to a neat retro district in Osaka, my dual hobbies, non-corporate yoga, portraits and point-and-shoots, and much more. Sign up for the free magazine to get the next issue and all the previous issues.

I mentioned yesterday that my mom and I visited Orchard Road, Singapore’s premier shopping district. We visited two malls during our short stay, and as we walked between them, I shot details of the street and neighborhood. It gives you a quick glimpse into what this place looks like.

Most stores are located in the giant malls that compete on the street. A seemingly endless number of big and fancy malls. Some of the larger retailers have storefronts that face the street directly. This store configuration appears to be quite different from other upscale shopping districts, such as 5th Avenue or Madison Avenue in New York City, or The Ginza in Tokyo, where stores tend to have their own storefronts instead of being housed in malls.

Interspersed between the shopping are hotels and apartments. All seems to be on the nicer end in this neighborhood. I have heard that some parts of Orchard Road, further to the northwest, are not as swanky as this area.
