The Leica Shelf and Other Cameras

The Leica Shelf – Austin, Texas

I’ve been talking less about the gear over the years, opting to concentrate on the photography and the stories behind it. Yes, the gear component is still there. I might have mentioned something in passing, and all of my posts clearly indicate what camera and lens I used to make an image.

I haven’t stopped collecting cameras and lenses, however. Since I’ve gotten into this hobby, I’ve amassed an embarrassing number of cameras, joking that I’ve stopped counting at 70. Many cameras are inexpensive point-and-shoots that I picked up at a really low price. Ironically, these digicams are becoming popular again. Perhaps I should sell some of my collection.

About a year and a half ago, I made a headlong plunge into Leica cameras. Yes, they are significantly more expensive, though I have blunted some of the cost by buying old, used models. However, as you can see from my Leica Shelf, I own many models, and they add up. Now that I’m older and officially retired, I’m spending an increasing amount of time around photography, camera collecting, and blogging. I’ve opened up the spigots for my only hobby.

One of my post-retirement tasks was to clean up and reorganize my home office. While it’s a work in progress, I was pleased that my main camera collection is now organized and readily accessible. On the shelf to the left is a similar setup with my Sony cameras, the Fujifilm GFX 50S II, and my newest medium format monstrosity, the Hasselblad X2D. I bought the X2D as a retirement present to myself.

Not all my camera purchases are expensive models. I’ve recently added some toy-like cameras, too. My new social media site talks more about the gear, but I’ll leave those details for tomorrow.
