Dual Subways and Flushing – Flushing, New York

I got off at my destination in Queens, one stop from the last stop on the Number 7 line, which is a big hint of where my wife and I are going. Have you figured out the destination?

Looking east along the subway tracks, I timed a shot as two trains passed each other. The train on the tracks closer to me is heading towards a cluster of buildings that have also sprouted over the last decade. Although not as impressively tall as Long Island City, Flushing is denser and more developed. The Chinatown there is now larger and more of a destination than the original in Manhattan. Downtown Flushing is so packed with people that it rivals the density of mid-town Manhattan.

I was using the Leica D-Lux 8 for all my NYC photos so far. The compact camera has a built-in zoom from 24-75mm equivalent. I’m zoomed in to the maximum 75mm in this photo, but it’s not nearly enough. Ideally, with a longer telephoto, I would be able to compress the trains with the background and create more drama. I’ll take what I can get with the compact gear I brought.
