Calm Commuter – New York, New York

At first, I thought I had photographed a Golden Retriever riding the New York subway. Looking at the image later, I realized the dog wasn’t the entire story. Several passengers seemed more interested in its owner than the dog itself. Whether they were curious, amused, or simply watching someone board, I can’t say.

Before visiting New York, I had read that dogs on the subway generally must be in a carrier unless they’re service animals. So I was a little surprised to see this Golden Retriever calmly riding the train without one. Whatever the dog’s status, what struck me most was how ordinary the scene felt. The dog simply sat there like another commuter. It reminded me that every city has two sets of rules: the ones written in the handbook and the ones shaped by everyday life. In New York, if you’re not causing a problem, people often seem willing to let you be.

Looking at the image again, I couldn’t help but notice that the Golden Retriever seems to be the happiest rider on the train. While most of the commuters wear focused or weary expressions, the dog looks completely content.
