Dream Downtown – New York, New York

This building immediately attracted my attention, for obvious reasons. It’s a striking and daring design that feels progressive for New York City. Despite its tall towers, I don’t think most of New York’s architecture is particularly striking. Chicago, for example, feels more architecturally adventurous. This building looks like something I might see in Tokyo.

Because of its stark geometry, the image begged for a black-and-white conversion. The lack of color reduces distractions, increases abstraction, and makes the facade pop even more.

The building originally served as the National Maritime Union headquarters and was completed in the 1960s. In 2011, it was converted into the Dream Downtown boutique hotel, now part of the Hyatt portfolio.
