Can public infrastructure become public art? US 183 is a major elevated highway in Austin. While it’s practical and efficient, is it very attractive? I think so, from the right angle.
The smooth concrete structure is the model of efficiency and minimalism. It dominates in a bold way, which rightly overpowers the wimpy buildings on the periphery. No need for extra trusses or structural elements. Its slender form, a mundane highway, may actually be prettier than the surrounding neighborhood – at least in a brutalist architectural way.
