Who would have thought the simple glass exterior of the Fairmont Austin would house such a striking interior. The hotel just opened and I stopped by during my exploration of SXSW 2018. SXSW seemed rather quiet this year and it was the visual delights of the Fairmont that attracted more of my photographic interest.
The first photo is of the main bar area, next to the lobby. I shot if from the balcony. The hotel is bright, modern yet classic at the same time. It’s now my favorite of the upscale hotels in Austin. There’s enough visual interest to add dimension but it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
For today, however, I’ll concentrate on the food hall, which is like a food court but with real restaurants. That’s where the mix of color and whimsy reaches its crescendo.
I was quietly shooting from the entrance when a hostess encouraged me to explore and take photos. That scored big points with me. An establishment that was friendly towards photography, which seems to be decreasing lately. It’s a far cry from the W Hotel, which was very proud of itself and was quite anti-photography, at least when they opened.
Here’s a few snaps of the food hall. My wife saw these and already wants to visit. I took more of the hotel, which I’ll showcase in a future post, perhaps with some added wide-angle drama.
