I remember this place well, having attended multiple conferences here. I like the building too, but something felt different as I walk though its empty corridors in 2018. It felt rather small and dated.
Thinking back, it was more than 25 years ago, when I first visited. I was a lot younger then, of course, and the building, a lot newer. Silicon Valley was big back then but it’s even larger now. Somehow this quaint convention center doesn’t quite hold up the mantle for one of the world’s most economically vibrant places. Modern architecture ages too, and this once modern facility looks slightly behind the times.
I made a comparison of San Jose to Austin, several days ago. And, as I suspected, Google tells me that the San Jose Convention Center is 165,000 square feet of exhibition space. Austin’s, 247,052. I’m sure SXSW had a lot to do with Austin’s growth. I remember Austin’s humble structure being enlarged a couple of times, over the years.
