I noticed groups of grade school kids approaching and wanted to do a creative effect. I’m assuming they were part of a school field trip to the Natural History Museum. I can remember going to the museums in New York when I was in elementary school.
I set the shutter speed really slow on my Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II. I shot this at 4/10 of a second. This allowed me to create this motion blur effect. The best image stabilization in the industry allowed me to keep everything else sharp, even though this is hand-held. In the past, something like this required a tripod.
I often use image stabilization to create high-quality images in dark conditions. However, it can also be handy to make these kinds of pictures. It’s an effective way to capture the sense of motion. I used this technique extensively in downtown Chicago creating these pictures. Sometimes, it’s about using the same techniques in different contexts.
