La Défense with the Fuji 16-80mm

La Défense (Telephoto) – Paris, France

I have one more set of images from the top of the Arc de Triomphe — it’s a fantastic place to view central Paris. Off in the distance, around 2 1/2 miles away, is Europe’s largest purpose-built business district, La Défense. Paris, unlike London, concentrated its tall and modern structures outside its historic core.

I brought one camera and one lens on my trip to Europe — the Fujifilm X-E3 and the Fujifilm 16-80mm f4 — a flexible combination that worked well. The APS-C setup gives me a 24mm to 120mm equivalent view. And these two pictures show off the focal range. The first photo is zoomed in at 120mm equivalent.

Notice the large square in the middle? It’s called the Grande Arche and is a modern echo of the Arc de Triomphe at a gigantic scale — a cube measuring 360 feet. The district contains 72 glass and steel buildings, including twenty skyscrapers and Europe’s largest shopping mall.

At its widest 24mm equivalent setting, you see the grand old boulevards of Paris radiating outward. The quaint neighborhood becomes the focal point as La Défense recedes.

  1. Hi,

How well do you like the Fuji 16-80mm lens? I also have this lens and have mixed feelings about it. Sometimes it seems great but other time it seems a little soft and I can’t quite pinpoint why. I’m using it on an X-PRO3.

Both your shots above seem nice and sharp! So perhaps it’s just me.

Recently, I’ve been considering the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 which I had on a Leica CL and loved and for which Sigma has a X mount version. I’d loose a lot of focal length but it is a faster lens, lighter and quite sharp.

    1. Hi Rene,

I had great luck with the 16-80mm and love the lens. Especially with the X-E3 that doesn’t have in-body image stabilization. The built-in lens IS worked well.

      1. HI,

Just to close the loop here: It’s not the Fiji lens, it’s me. I was recently diagnosed with “essential tremor” which I was told happens to a lot of people as they get older. So, on to the monopod to see what happens.
