Historic Residential Neighborhood – Chur, Switzerland

I passed through what appeared to be a residential neighborhood as I reached the cemetery next to Saint Mary of the Assumption Cathedral that I featured yesterday. Perhaps this might look similar to other historic districts in Switzerland, but it seems pretty special from an American perspective.

Most residential areas are low-density in the United States — the suburban model, which makes it convenient for cars but isolating for people. In bigger American cities, density is achieved via straight grid-like blocks of apartment buildings. However, there is something wonderful about gently curving streets and seeing bits of distant buildings. It creates an anticipation of what lies beyond.

There is more architectural and building height variety here than in downtown Chur. However, there is still a similarity in form and materials to make these neighborhoods harmonious. So pleasant was the space that it kept pulling me forward to discover the next visual delight
