This is one of my favorite pictures I shot in Cuba, it may be tied with this one. Both photographs capture the flavor of old Havana, but in a very different way. My other choice is definitely more dramatic, while the appreciation of this picture is more subtle.
Why do I like it? It combined geometry and architecture with loads of texture and color. There’s near symmetry, with extreme contrast. The little girl in the bright pink dress is a much-appreciated bonus. It elevates the image from being purely architectural. How many other once-grand old structures remain undocumented? I’m sure there are many, given the rich urban tapestry.
This is also the type of image that many might pass by without much notice. I love it when I find jewels like this, a skill that I would love to keep on developing. The hardest detail to execute well was shooting perfectly flat and straight to the building. I tweaked this in post, and I got it mostly right. It’s harder than it looks to keep everything straight; the openings aren’t exactly plumb.
