You can watch a lot of tennis for free during Fan Week. And the views are fantastic, as you can see here. I was up higher for this vantage point, but later walked down right next to the court when I saw space open up.
There are real matches underway to determine who qualifies for the main tournament. The top 100 players usually get in automatically. However, players ranked between about 100 and 250 play in the US Open Qualifying Tournament, which takes place during Fan Week, as seen here.
You don’t see real matches of the top stars; however, you occasionally get to see them practicing and warming up. Lots of free tennis without shelling the big bucks for the start of the official US Open tournament, that sounds great for me since I’m not a super fan. I view all of this as an opportunity for photography and don’t care too much about the top players.
