Sports Action with a Compact Camera – Flushing, New York

So far, I have used the Leica D-Lux 8 for all my New York City pictures. That was my primary camera for this trip. And while the compact form factor is perfect for travel and street photography, it’s not ideal for sports and fast action. Yesterday, I featured an on-court interaction, and the camera worked great for that. But how about faster sports action?

I found it an interesting challenge. I fiddled with settings I’d never accessed before, trying to eke out the best performance I could from this compact camera. I discuss all the tweaks I made to the camera and feature some more action shots in this post from Substack, which I posted nearly a year ago in August, 2025.

I’ve mentioned Substack in passing on this blog. That platform has become a secondary blog that features more detailed posts with ample pictures. I don’t post on Substack daily as I do here. Instead, I average about four or so posts per month.

What it gives me is an alternate, more timely place to publish the newest content. For example, I already have four posts about this New York Trip on Substack from nearly a year ago. And, the post about shooting sports with the Leica D-Lux 8 is something I wrote and published during my actual NYC trip.

By the way, notice the odd oval shape of the tennis ball? I explained why that happens on Substack. What to find out what’s the latest in my photographic world? Visit Substack and find out.
