Remember yesterday when I said all that stuff about preserving the purity of street photography by using a manual-focus Leica camera? I truly believe that, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t still use a backup camera for some autofocus insurance.

I wanted to make sure I successfully captured the scene outside The Met after closing. When I’m shooting with the Leica M 246, especially during fast-changing scenes like this, I don’t have time to check focus and composition. Grabbing a few quick shots with my autofocus D-Lux 8 is a prudent move.

Notice, however, that I didn’t frame the picture the same way, even though I could have. Instead of setting the zoom to a 50mm equivalent to match the focal length of the M 246, I shot wider. This picture is at 37mm, wide enough to include the couple on the right, along with the crowds and The Met’s architecture in the background.

If you recall some of the recent posts from inside The Met, I used both the 50mm black-and-white Leica and the wider perspective of the D-Lux 8 to create two views of the same scene. That’s effectively what I’ve done here when you include yesterday’s picture.
