There are certainly more photogenic views of an Amsterdam canal, and I’ve shot them. But I enjoy this particular slice of everyday life. The red truck stands out, as well as the bits of red in the canal boats. It’s also the contrast and textures that attract me. The contrast of the modern vehicle to the surrounding texture filled brickwork.
These are the details that I miss in modern places, particularly with modern materials that don’t age gracefully. This is what makes old cities so enticing, even if it’s of grunge and worn out things. There is an authenticity that only comes with age.
I shot this back in 2014 during my business trip to the Netherlands, with the Fujifilm X100s. Part of my Travelgram Collection, where I seek travel photos beyond the typical post cards.
