Everyday Life, Peace Memorial Park – Hiroshima, Japan

After such a serious post about a weighty museum, I wanted to end my Hiroshima coverage with a slice of everyday life. Normalcy can be comforting. A daily routine or meeting friends at a park is mundane, yet important. I captured these three photos at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Among the symbolic architecture and memorial statues, life goes on.

My short, two-day trip to Hiroshima was both enjoyable and productive. I went to Miyajima twice, ate Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki and even slept in a capsule hotel.

After making these photos, I got on a streetcar towards the main train station where I boarded a bullet train back to Osaka. I got myself a rather low-key dinner at a convenience store and ate it on the train, which is actually common in Japan and surprisingly enjoyable.

  1. Andy, I really like seeing “everyday life” in Japan. I’ve only been to Yokosuka and Yokohama via train on the way to Tokyo. I was always in city environments so I never saw suburbs or inner city residential areas the way I know them here. Seeing your images of everyday life are very interesting. I’m curious to to see more.
