I don’t usually shoot street photographs or any fast action with the Canon G7X Mark II. It’s not the fastest handling camera. Though not terrible, I have better cameras for the task — the Olympus OM-D or PEN-F, for example. The biggest slowdown is the motorized zoom. But these type of lenses retract completely into the body, to maintain their compact, pants pocketable form factor. There’s always trade-offs.

Today’s photograph on the street is different for a couple of reasons. First, I shot it with the slowish G7X Mark II. But I also shot it at the camera’s maximum focal length, at a 100mm equivalent. Call me a traditionalist, but I like my street photographs with short focal lengths, somewhere between 35mm and 50mm.

Shooting with a telephoto, like in today’s photo seems a bit impersonal. But, on the other hand, I was able to create this from across the street and the distance allowed me to shoot with a slower camera. There was a bit of luck, too. At a slow 1/20 of a second, I just happen to catch the couple at the right moment and without motion blur. Sometimes, luck can be your friend.
