Back about three weeks ago, when I featured a portrait of Paola, I mentioned that the Viceland SXSW venue set up a skating rink with a 70s vibe. Here’s a person who attracted my attention. An accomplished skater with heart-shaped sunglasses and a period athletic look made for an interesting photo.
It took a lot of attempts to make even these two modest images; many things conspired to make it difficult. While I love my Olympus PEN-F, it’s not ideal for action/sports photography. The focus is fine for the street but not for fast-moving skaters. Its focusing accuracy and speed certainly reduced my keeper rate, along with less than stellar compositions caused by a cluttered background of people. I finally caught a gap within the packs of skaters.
These are the times when I wonder about the flagship Olympus OM-D E-M1X. This newest Olympus camera has their fastest and most sophisticated focusing system, built intentionally for sports and action. I don’t shoot action often enough to justify that expensive camera, but I’m sure curious what the keeper rate will be.
