West Side Skyscrapers – Austin, Texas

I’m back downtown with my Fujifilm GFX 50R after a quick test making portraits with my new camera. I’m taking advantage of other vantage points. This time, looking north-west from more of the center of downtown. I’ve often photographed these clusters of buildings, but never from this angle. I found this post from 2016 that talks about West Austin Rising. All of those buildings are now complete, along with another layer of skyscrapers. In fact, there is only one building left — currently being built — marked by two red cranes.

The new Central Library and 2nd Street bridge, frequent topics of mine, are both located here. As Austin grows, the traffic and available free parking get more challenging. I made this photo before-COVID and was forced to park on the south side of the river. This is from the South First Street Bridge, as I crossed it to get to the heart of downtown.

I was beginning to get more fluid with the chunky Fuji GFX 50R. Using a tripod is best for optimal images, but I’ve gotten better at hand-held photos when possible. At ISO 320 and a shutter speed of 1/80s, no tripod necessary, at least for now. The sun was setting rapidly, however. You can see a hint of warm color on the horizon.
