I walked one block north and up the hill to 7th Street. That’s where I took this picture look southwest. The building dominating the center is a new 32-story hotel and apartment tower under construction, located at 5th and Brazos Streets.
Behind this tower, two iconic Austin buildings, the pointy Frost Bank Building and the Austonian. I imagine when finished, this new building will block their view.
Look closely, and you might see that there are three towers under construction. To the right of the Frost Building, 300 Colorado, a 31-story office tower, scaled back from the initially planned 44-story residential building. Next to it, 405 Colorado, a 25-story tower with a yet to be visible, unique design.
This isn’t Dubai or New York City, these skyscrapers aren’t particularly tall. However, for Austin, which was a sleepy college town not too long ago, these downtown developments are rather impressive.
