I was standing on Trinity Street, looking west down 2nd Street. To my back, the west side of the Convention Center. On the right, you have the JW Marriott and Hampton Inn. One of many hotels in the area.
I remember when the Convention Center first opened, in 1992, when I just arrived in Austin. The criticism was the lack of hotels. People claimed the size of the facility and lack of beds considerably limited the conventions that can be held in Austin. They expanded the place in 2002, and some mega-hotels where built — including The Fairmont and Marriott that I recently mentioned.
These low-rise buildings are restaurants, but there are plans of another expansion of the Convention Center into this area, growing another block east. If built as intended, this entire site will change considerably over the next several years.
