I mentioned yesterday that I visited Georgetown, Texas back in July. My main purpose was to drive my son safely to a park during the pandemic. However, I never let a good photographic opportunity go to waste. While I waited for my son, I shot the downtown square. It turned out, I was there for three hours, which gave me a lot of time for observation.
Today, a Photo Essay of things that caught my eye. I made all pictures with the Canon G1X Mark II, which is a 2014 high-end compact camera. I love its versatility and color. It’s not the fastest camera but worked perfectly for these static scenes.
There was lots of great small town architecture — a lively place that seems to have a growing future.
I’ve been Georgetown several times before, but it’s been some years since my last visit. They’ve always had quint stores and antiques like many small Texas towns. However, I saw new establishments that go beyond the typical — stylish cafes for the coffee crowd and even an art gallery.
I found some well-balanced architecture. Pure in its execution with the right amount of ornamentation. Not too plain, but not too fancy. Both are clearly designed for its intended purpose.
Seeking out the small details were fun, too, both ornamental and architectural.
There was a fair bit of color. Which generally works well against the white Texas limestone. This colorful mural wins the award for the most beautiful back of house alleyway facade.
Finally, this unassuming photo represents a promising future for Georgetown. That’s new construction across the street from the trucks. The white limestone and red brick building doesn’t have all the ornamentation of the old structures, but the scale of the building fits right in. I would love to see the town center continue its expansion along with the original downtown footprint. It beats suburban McMansions any day.

Andy, I’ve walked around the Georgetown square a couple times and have found myself wondering exactly what to shoot to capture the flavor of the town. Great combination of images. Pickups and SUVs are everywhere. Limestone, flags, old concrete and retail doors are colorful. This is it.
Thank you, Charles. It was fun browsing and observing the square. We should go visit other small Texas towns.
